I almost ended up homeless, more than once. It was never something I dreamed of or planned, life just has a funny way of unfolding. The housing crisis in the sea-to-sky corridor is something that gave me a glimpse of how quickly situations beyond my control could shift me into that reality. It put me on edge. Not only was I uncertain if I would have a roof over my head, but deeper than that, I wondered what having a safe space was worth to me. I went into survival, fight or flight mode. I did what I could to make ends meet and often used the food bank for additional support. It was more than my basic human physical needs that were affected, it was my dignity. Our societal structures have been set up in such a way that people who find themselves in these situations are often looked down upon by the masses, which perpetuates shame. I needed to reclaim my power first and foremost. Although I did manage to find housing, I lived in toxic environments for years because I told myself "at least you have a home". That narrative is outdated and we need to shift this paradigm. I'm happy to say that after doing a lot of the inner work to absolve my ego from this narrative, my home is the best it's ever been.

I am donating $1 of the proceeds from each Helping Hands Charity Beanie sold to Squamish Helping Hands. Their vision is to end homelessness and hunger throughout our community. At Squamish Helping Hands they believe that everyone has something to offer. They are more than just a shelter, they are an exchange: our participants are encouraged to contribute through meaningful work, cultivate resiliency through a supportive community, and strive for independence through a Housing First Approach.
